NASA, White House issue asteroid-finding "Grand Challenge"

NASA and the White House are scheduled to announce today the latest in a series of "Grand Challenges" to encourage private-public partnerships to achieve the ambitious goal of finding potentially catastrophic asteroids heading for Earth. The reason for the challenge is two-fold: There are several asteroids near Earth that could hit the planet, and NASA is planning a manned space mission, called Asteroid Redirect Mission, to land on and explore an asteroid.
