NIH awards $12.7M to resurrect abandoned drugs

The NIH's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences announced nine awards Tuesday that will link scientists with pharmaceutical companies to resurrect abandoned drugs to determine new use in the production of treatments for Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, alcoholism and calcified heart valves, among other ailments. The nine awards total $12.7 million and the drugs will be provided by AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly and Co., Janssen Research & Development, Pfizer and Sanofi.
