Conference Board index signals U.S. recession is slowing

The Conference Board's index of leading economic indicators in the U.S. posted its biggest gain in five years last month. The index, which rose 1.2% in May, forecasts economic activity in the next three to six months. "The recession is losing steam," said Ken Goldstein, an economist with The Conference Board. "If these trends continue, expect a slow recovery beginning before the end of the year."
