GE reassures markets about commitment to keep GE Capital

General Electric said it is "committed to retaining GE Capital," responding to a proposal from the Obama administration that could force the company to spin off the financial unit. Seeking to reassure markets, GE raised issue with the proposal to erect a firewall between financial and nonbanking activities at the same company, saying such a move would be "unnecessary and unwise."
