The National Security Agency surveillance scandal highlights the need for transparency in the private sector when it comes to collecting location data, Natasha Leger writes. Many companies have adopted an approach of trying to collect data without customers realizing it, but consumers should be able to make informed decisions about what they share, she notes. "The mindset has to shift from 'getting away' with as much as possible in order to monetize people's data to one of using privacy protections as a competitive advantage," Leger writes.
