Ore. district adopts policy to recruit more diverse teaching force

The Portland, Ore., School Board voted Monday to develop an affirmative action plan to identify staffing needs and recruit a more diverse workforce. It is anticipated the district's student population includes more people of color and males than it employs in the schools. The affirmative action policy, which forbids "rigid, inflexible quotas," seeks to build upon the 1991's Minority Teacher Act, which also sought to recruit a more diverse teaching force.
