United Airlines to require $2,500 minimum purchase for elite status

Planned changes to United Airlines' MileagePlus frequent flier program will require fliers to spend a minimum of $2,500 per year to qualify for elite status levels in 2015. The spending target is $2,500 and 25,000 miles for Silver, $5,000 and 50,000 miles for Premier Gold, and $7,500 and 75,000 miles for Platinum status. The move is intended to improve elite benefits for passengers who spend and fly more, which can already be said for most members, a United spokesman said.
