BASF closes in on Cognis acquisition, sources say

German chemical major BASF is reportedly preparing to complete a deal to buy specialty chemicals maker Cognis for at least $3.71 billion, with the agreement gaining traction during the weekend. Cognis' owners, led by Goldman Sachs, rejected a higher bid from Lubrizol, increasing the likelihood of a BASF announcement this week. The deal is not final, sources said.
