AMA: Insurers inaccurately process nearly 20% of medical claims

The rate of errors in processing medical claims among insurance companies climbed to 19.3%, up 2 percentage points, according to an annual report from the American Medical Association. The group examined timeliness and accuracy of claims among seven big U.S. insurers and found that UnitedHealth exhibited the highest accuracy rating at 90% while Anthem Blue Cross Shield had the lowest at 61%. Insurance companies said the inaccuracies were partly due to physicians who are slow to adopt electronic records.
