AMA president calls for new physician payment system

Congress must replace the sustainable growth rate formula with a physician payment model for Medicare that covers the cost of care and improves quality and coordination, AMA outgoing President Dr. Cecil B. Wilson told the group's House of Delegates at its annual meeting. He said Medicare patients and physicians should be allowed to enter into private contracts for payment and added changes are needed to the Affordable Care Act to help protect physicians.
