Expert: Use best quake-resistant technology to rebuild Christchurch

Christchurch, New Zealand, should use the best earthquake-resistant technologies available as it rebuilds, says Stefano Pampanin, an engineering professor at Canterbury University. Prestressed laminated timber or a precast seismic structural system using concrete should be considered. A building constructed with those technologies "shakes but it doesn't break and is quickly back in operation," Pampanin said.
