Massachusetts may soon follow in the wake of Maine and Connecticut and pass a law requiring labels to indicate if genetically modified ingredients are present in food. The legislature has five bills pending. but Louis Finkel, executive vice president for government affairs at the Grocery Manufacturers Association, argued the labels would be confusing and are unnecessary. "[G]enetically engineered ingredients provide no material difference from their conventional counterparts and, as such, putting a label will be inherently misleading and confusing to consumers," he said.
