Netflix makes caching appliances to boost video-streaming speeds

Netflix has developed data-caching appliances that it has deployed at ISPs, speeding up the process of delivering video to subscribers while also improving the quality of the video stream, Janko Roettgers writes. Netflix's OpenConnect appliances were influenced by the do-it-yourself model of Backblaze, which developed its own storage system for its online backup service, rather than buying more expensive hardware from vendors, he notes.
