Researchers ID potential sources of C. diff infection

Diarrhea-causing Clostridium difficile bacteria are increasingly striking young, otherwise healthy patients who haven't had a prolonged hospital stay -- an estimated 20% to 28% of all C. diff cases -- according to a recent study. Eighty-two percent of the 984 patients included in the study had visited a health care facility but did not have a prolonged stay, and 64% had recently finished a course of antibiotics before developing C. diff-related diarrhea. Most of the C. diff patients who had not recently visited a health care facility also had not recently taken antibiotics, but they were more likely to be taking proton-pump inhibitors, the researchers found.
