Risky Medicare prescriptions highlighted in report

A report on Medicare Part D published by the HHS Office of Inspector General found that more than 700 providers throughout the country prescribed medicines to disabled and elderly patients in ways that were highly questionable and potentially harmful. A hearing on prescription abuse in Part D was set for today by Sen. Thomas R. Carper, D-Del., who is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. "Strong oversight of the Medicare prescription drug program is critical for protecting patients from harm," Carper said in an e-mail.
