Ultrasound cane gives blind a better sense of surroundings

A new white cane for the blind that uses ultrasound and mimics the sonar-like capability of bats has been developed at the Indian Institute of Technology to give users a better sense of their crowded surroundings. Detecting an object within a 45-degree radius up from its tip, the cane transmits vibrations that indicate an obstruction, guiding the user away.
