Commentary: Is Google smart to go after PayPal?

Writing in BusinessWeek Online, Robert D. Hof notes that Google's path to prominence in the online payment space is littered with the online payment schemes of wannabes like Citibank, Yahoo! and even eBay which decided to buy market leader PayPal when it realized it couldn't beat them. PayPal boasts 72 million accounts and total payments increasing 44% per year.
