Farm bill defeat leaves outlook for next step uncertain

The failure of the farm bill is leaving backers assessing what went wrong in the effort to secure its passage and leaving the prospect of a new or resurrected bill uncertain. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said he is "not optimistic" that the bill will make it back to the House floor. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., a former House Agriculture Committee chairman, won his amendment before the bill failed to pass, and suggested that taking the bill up in pieces could be helpful in passing it. With the Goodlatte amendment, the bill would improve dairy policy, said Connie Tipton, CEO of IDFA.
