Faster wireless LAN on the horizon as new Wi-Fi standard goes live

The Wi-Fi Alliance has begun certifying interoperable wireless LAN products. The devices use the IEEE's new 802.11ac standard. The protocol -- which, unlike older versions of Wi-Fi, operates in the 5 GHz spectrum band -- is said to be able to increase connection speeds by as much as 200% thanks to wider channels and improved modulation techniques.
