First-time unemployment claims climb in U.S.

The Labor Department says initial unemployment claims increased by 18,000 last week, to 354,000. However, the total indicates modest improvement in the labor market, economists say. The four-week rolling average, seen as giving a more accurate picture, increased by 2,500, to 348,250.
