New test identifies HCV genotype

The FDA recently approved a test that distinguishes among various hepatitis C virus strains based on genotype. The test could lead to better outcomes because different strains of HCV respond to different drugs, the FDA says. The test is approved for use in patients already diagnosed with HCV and is not approved to screen for HCV in blood or blood products or in tissue donors.
