Proposed border-security amendment to immigration bill gains support

A proposal to strengthen border-security measures in the Senate immigration bill has gained support from some lawmakers, increasing the bill's chances of winning votes from Republicans. The amendment would increase the number of border control agents to almost 40,000 and would require 700 miles of fencing. "By securing the border first, we're enhancing the chances of the House taking up the bill," said Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., one of the authors of the proposal.
