U.K. study indicates eye antibiotic is ineffective

An Oxford University study indicates the antibiotic chloramphenicol, recently cleared for OTC sales in the U.K., is largely ineffective in treating conjunctivitis. The researchers said parents should wash children's eyes with warm water rather than use the antibiotic, which was approved for OTC sales despite concerns the move could lead to increased antibiotic resistance.
