Maryland scores reveal puzzling gap for blacks

Analysis of Maryland's just-released state test results reveals that middle-school black students trailed non-Hispanic whites more in math than in reading, while the achievement gap for Hispanic students was about the same in both subjects. A Montgomery, Md., official suggested the math "bulge" could partly be a result of some students having difficulty reading complex math problems.
