Despite promise of paperless travel, technology can fall short

Seventeen airlines are now testing paperless boarding passes, allowing passengers to clear security with a bar code on their cell phone or other mobile device. Though experts say the technology will eventually become the standard for airline travel, early tests have revealed problems and gate agents sometimes have had to print out traditional boarding passes.
