NIH to fund trial on blood-transfusion safety

The NIH will allot $3.9 million every year for four years to support a clinical trial that will evaluate outcomes in heart surgery patients who receive red blood cell transfusions to determine whether blood-storage time affects transfusion safety. The initiative will aim to advance blood safety and "help guide clinical practice," an expert said.
