NYC official: City will seek new assessment for gifted programs

The New York City school system will seek a new assessment test for its gifted-education programs, according to a top education official. Some have questioned whether extensive test preparation among wealthy families has led to a demographic makeup in the gifted programs that does not reflect the overall racial and economic diversity of the city. Marc Sternberg, the city's deputy chancellor for portfolio planning, said the city would seek a test that would level the playing field and could be in place by the 2012-13 school year.
