Regulators: No "FireWire" is needed if the boxes have an IP gateway

The FCC has nixed a rule that required the installation of IEEE 1394 interfaces -- known as "FireWire" -- on set-top boxes as long as the gear includes another avenue to link up with home IP networks. The agency is considering rules that would require all service providers to install "plug and play" IP-based gateways on their set-tops.
