E-Commerce in Western Europe Coming of Age

Data drawn from eMarketer's latest Europe B2C E-Commerce Report shows there were 165 million Internet users in Western Europe in 2003, 46% of whom purchased goods or services online, generating in excess of $33 billion in revenue. While this pales into comparison to the U.S., which generated over $94 billion in B2C e-commerce revenue during the same period, the Western European e-commerce market has reached something of a turning point and is growing rapidly. In March 2004, leading U.S. Internet portal Yahoo! announced its intention to acquire the leading European comparison shopping site, Kelkoo for $475 million. The acquisition signifies consumer e-commerce in Western Europe is coming of age. www.emarketer.com
