In England, expulsions on the rise

New government data indicate English schools expelled 9,880 children in 2003-04, an increase of more than 6% over the previous year's 9,290 cases. While Schools Minister Jacqui Smith noted the government is taking a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behavior, Shadow Schools Minister Mark Hoban called the figures "further proof of the deteriorating standards of behavior in our schools."
