Bent support beam stalls Utah bridge-replacement project

Utah's ambitious, innovative bridge-replacement program hit a snag over the weekend when workers lifting a 3-million-pound bridge section off its remote-controlled transporter discovered a slight bend in a support beam. "[W]e've slowed down a little bit and are having some additional components fabricated at this point to address the bending," said a state DOT spokesman, adding that the span should be in place by Wednesday. The department is planning to replace one bridge per week along I-80 westbound as part of a $137 million project.
