Maryland county, health officials debate oversight of school nurses

Officials in Maryland's Howard County are considering turning the school nursing program over to the county health department, but school officials oppose the plan. Schools have access to families and classroom teachers that can help nurses ensure more students are immunized, checked for dental problems and taught about general wellness; health officials said they would be able to extend programs covering such areas as childhood obesity and asthma.
