In British Columbia, tours that offer visitors an up-close view of grizzly bears are rapidly increasing in popularity as part of the area's eco-tourism boom. Tour operators say the expeditions, where tourists shoot cameras rather than rifles, are safer than one might think, although it still may not be what some think of as a vacation. "We get a lot of people who have done the whole safari circuit," says Tom Rivest, co-owner of the Great Bear Nature Tours. "There's a huge market out there who have come of age watching nature documentaries, and they're retiring and ready to travel."
