Visa, MasterCard to benefit from compromise on debit card fees

Negotiators working on merging the House and Senate versions of the regulatory-overhaul legislation have agreed to a compromise on limiting debit card fees merchants pay to banks. Analysts say the compromise will benefit Visa, MasterCard and other major payment processors. The agreement directs the Federal Reserve to determine limits on interchange fees. It also gives the Fed the leeway to consider how much protecting against fraud will cost the banks.
