Make the most out of mulch with proper use

Mulch can reduce midday soil temperatures and prevent weeds when it is applied properly, writes John Hogan. "Most organic materials such as ground bark, ground wood chips or shredded leaves can provide the key benefits of moisture conservation, weed control, thermal insulation and organic matter addition," said Bert Cregg, a forestry and horticulture professor at Michigan State University. When buying mulch, ask about its source to prevent disease and apply only about 2 to 3 inches at the base of a plant to ensure it will not block the flow of air and water, Hogan notes.
