Mideast conflict hampers exploration of pillar dating to Davidic times

Political conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is preventing archaeologists from excavating a pillar that could shed light on the rule of King David. The design of the five-ton pillar is consistent with that of the First Temple and would provide solid evidence of the king's existence in Israel, experts say. "As the site is located in the West Bank, not within the official borders of Israel, it is more problematic to excavate there than inside Israel," said Yosef Garfinkel, an archeology professor at Hebrew University who has inspected the site.
