Modular facades would adapt to any climate

A project in Europe is underway to create a multifunctional facade system for residential buildings that can be used for energy-efficiency retrofits. The idea is to use phase-change materials technology to create facade modules that can be adapted to any climate by adjusting how photovoltaic cells, ventilation, insulation and vegetation work and interact. A demo project undertaken by ACCIONA Infrastructure in Madrid is expected to start this summer, but, as some note, challenges remain.
