Robot digs like a clam

The Atlantic razor clam won the prize for digging efficiency as judged by Amos Winter, an assistant professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who was looking for a model in nature for his proposed underwater digging robot. The result is the RoboClam, a robot whose uses may include digging trenches for underwater cable installation, deep-sea oil recovery and, in the future, exploration of the moons of Jupiter.
