Although food manufacturers have until 2006 to label products containing trans fats, many companies are going further and researching new trans-fat-free products. J.M. Smucker recently introduced a version of a trans-fat-free Crisco and Frito-Lay and Kraft are looking for substitutes for the fats. One consumer group says the mandated labels are not enough and the government should ban trans fats altogether, but manufacturers argue an outright ban does not address the problem and consumers then could simply choose foods high in saturated fats.
