FDA orders premarket testing of dietary supplement ingredients

The Food and Drug Administration announced it soon will begin requiring makers of supplements to test all of the ingredients in their products to ensure they are free of contamination and impurities. The agency ordered a three-year phase-in period, beginning Aug. 24, saying any supplement that does not contain the ingredients it claims would be considered adulterated or misbranded, with the same enforcement response now applied to drugmakers.
