Report: Private-sector support crucial to drug R&D

Many drugs "would have been delayed significantly" or would not have been developed without funding and expertise from drug companies, according to a Manhattan Institute for Public Policy report released Tuesday. The report -- based on case histories of 35 popularly prescribed medicines -- counters criticism that drugmakers have capitalized on government-backed research discoveries, only to produce new versions of existing therapies instead of innovative treatments, the lead author said.
