More than 800 of the 1,035 positions eliminated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina came from schools, according to district data. A teacher assistant who works with students with hearing impairments said the loss of her job will hurt her students. "It is hard for me to understand how my $20,000-a-year job could be worth what these students will no longer have," she wrote in a letter to a newspaper.
