Longer diabetes duration raises post-surgery recurrence

Diabetes patients who had the disease for five years or more were nearly four times as likely to experience diabetes recurrence following remission from weight-loss surgery than those who had the disease for a shorter duration, a small study presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting revealed. "One of the messages from this study is that obese patients with type 2 diabetes might want to consider bariatric surgery earlier in the disease, which might improve the chances that remission will persist," said researcher Dr. Yessica Ramos.
