GAO: Many challenges mean railroads won't meet 2015 PTC deadline

A number of "interrelated challenges" posed by the implementation of positive train control will prevent U.S. railroads from meeting the Dec. 31, 2015, deadline for installing the systems, according to a Government Accountability Office report. The agency's report included interviews from officials of Class I railroads. "For example, freight railroad representatives told us that without adequate time for field testing, PTC systems could potentially malfunction or fail more frequently, causing system disruptions," said GAO officials.
