Italian groups oppose labeling based on stoplight colors

Though major U.K. retailers have signed on to a plan to provide nutrition information using stoplight colors, food industry groups in Italy oppose the plan as simplistic. "[W]e wish to underline, once again, the importance of a varied and balanced diet, together with regular physical exercise," according to a statement from the groups. "We therefore continue to oppose any food labelling system based on a 'traffic-light' approach, which will end up just confusing consumers and giving them the wrong information about what they should eat."
