Nursing home care a less-popular option for elderly

A shift away from institutionalized care for the elderly is emerging as more adult children take on the responsibility of caring for their elderly parents. The percentage of people over 75 in nursing homes dropped from 9.6% in 1985 to 6.4% in 2004, according to the AARP, and experts say the drop reflects an increasing preference for less-restrictive types of care.
