China to study ecological effects of Yangtze River dam

China has ordered an ecological assessment of the proposed Xiaonanhai dam on the Yangtze River. Environmentalists fear the dam in the mountains of western China could cause extinction of the giant Chinese sturgeon, one of the world's longest freshwater fish. "The Chinese government is fond of developing hydropower, but we must take into account the environmental effects of those projects," said Wan Bentai, chief engineer for the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
