Restaurant offers formerly homeless women a taste of success

Plates Cafe in Sacramento, Calif., offers formerly homeless women the chance to develop marketable skills and gives them a sense of purpose, says the restaurant's sous chef, who is one of only three paid staffers. The cafe is a program of the St. John's Shelter Program for Women & Children, which hopes to turn it into a profitable enterprise to fund similar training programs such as a nail salon or child care.
