Volatility soars and equities slump

The CBOE volatility index soared, fluctuating around 30 as the markets approached closing Thursday. Stocks were dragged down by lingering fears over Greek sovereign debt, uncertainty over the outcome of financial regulatory reform and worries about the possibility of the world sliding into a double-dip recession.
