Analysis: Facebook profiles go beyond user-submitted data

A white-hat hacker has created software that scrapes huge amounts of Facebook users' personal information from the social network's publicly accessible pages -- and that's just the tip of the iceberg, Natasha Lomas writes. Facebook's data trove is so huge that it includes data-rich "shadow profiles" of information about nonusers that can be inferred from their friends' posts and personal information. "You might never join Facebook, but a zombie you -- sewn together from scattered bits of your personal data -- is still sitting there in sort-of-stasis on its servers waiting to be properly animated if you do sign up for the service," Lomas writes.
